Alexandria, Virginia—This morning, members of the Alexandria City Council unanimously approved a zoning text amendment to allow abortion clinics in Alexandria by right, meaning they don’t have to get any special approvals to be built. This zoning change eliminates barriers to abortion access in Alexandria and is an important step towards ensuring everyone in Alexandria can get abortion can when they need it. 

“We’re thrilled the Alexandria City Council adopted this zoning amendment. Everyone should have access to abortion and by allowing abortion clinics by right, we will be closer to making that a reality for everyone,”LaTwyla Mathias, Executive Director of Progress Virginia, said. “In a world where many states and communities are making it harder and harder to access safe abortion care, we must be a place where everyone can choose how and when to become a parent for themselves.”
