5 things to know about GOP candidate for Lieutenant Governor

Today is the first forum between candidates for Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax and Jill Vogel. We think there are some things you need to know before hearing what they have to say.

  1. Republican Jill Vogel wants to force invasive vaginal ultrasounds on women.

In 2012, Jill Vogel introduced legislation in the Virginia State Senate requiring women to have an invasive ultrasound before obtaining an abortion. I’ve had a transvaginal ultrasound. It’s an uncomfortable, stressful, and invasive experience even when medically necessary. When it’s a procedure forced upon women by right wing, anti-women’s health extremists it’s all those things, plus an invasion of privacy, and an insult to women and doctors.

  2. Jill Vogel thinks it’s okay to target transgender kids.

Jill Vogel is running, full sprint, to the right. After announcing her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor last year, she used scare tactics to attack both Barack Obama AND transgender children.

  3. Jill Vogel’s law firm defended State Senators in a lawsuit to keep public records private.

We talk about politically motivated redistricting a lot at Progress Virginia. But did you know the law firm Holtzman Vogel Josefiak Torchinsky was paid hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars under a no-bid contract to defend Virginia State Senators from a lawsuit—one that alleged state elections maps illegally protect incumbents from challengers? The firm successfully argued that Senators’ records regarding how  and why they drew the lines should be off-limits to public scrutiny. Oh, by the way, Vogel was both a Republican State Senator and a managing partner at that law firm at the time.

  4. Jill Vogel’s law firm was allegedly involved in voter suppression.

The same law firm where Vogel is a managing partner was also allegedly involved in a voter suppression scheme in North Carolina in 2016. Redistricting and voter suppression seem to go hand-in-hand for this Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor. It’s almost as if Republicans would prefer only some people have the right to vote. [We disagree.]

  5. Jill Vogel is cozying up to corporate special interests.

Dominion Energy has contributed $17,500 to Jill Vogel’s Lieutenant Governor campaign. It’s also worth mentioning that as a State Senator, Vogel voted in favor of the 2016 bill to shield Dominion from rate reviews. That means she voted to allow Dominion, a publicly regulated monopoly, to gouge consumers with no oversight.
