Missed Jeff Sessions in Richmond Today?

We compiled the five most important things every person should know about Jeff Sessions.

1. Jeff Sessions lied under oath during his confirmation hearing.

During Sessions’ Attorney General confirmation hearing, Senator Al Franken asked Sessions a question about investigating the Trump campaign’s possible communications with Russia. Sessions answered, “I’m not aware of any of those activities.” He went on to voluntarily say he hadn’t met with Russians at all last year. The Washington Post exposed that lie; Sessions met with the Russian ambassador twice last year and lied about it, under oath, to Congress.

2. He was denied a federal judgeship for racist behavior and comments.

In 1986, a Senate committee refused to appoint Sessions to a federal judgeship after testimony revealed he had a pattern of racist behavior. As a U.S. Attorney, Sessions repeatedly used racial slurs and other derogatory terms. During those hearings, the late Senator Ted Kennedy said,: “it is inconceivable to me that a person of this attitude is qualified to be a U.S. attorney, let alone a U.S. federal judge.” Senator Kennedy went on to call for Sessions’ resignation. That was in 1986. Our current Attorney General, in 2017, was too racist for 1986! Scary.

3. Sessions supports private prisons

Last year the Obama Administration signed an order that would phase out the use of private prisons for United States citizens after investigations revealed these prisons have far more security problems and are considerably less safe than ones run by the government. Jeff Sessions almost immediately reversed that order,; leaving many Americans in the prison system at risk. The reversal may or may not be related to his very extensive and public ties with major private prison lobbying groups.

4. He’s had a long history of attacking civil rights’ groups

Jeff Sessions called the ACLU and NAACP “communist” and “un-American,” stating he believes both groups do more harm than good. In one of his most high-profile cases, Sessions went after activists building political power in the Black community in Alabama after the 1965 Civil Rights Act passed Congress. The three activists were found not guilty. But Sessions’ “voter fraud” charges could have landed the trio in jail for 100 years.

Sessions is also no friend to the HRC; his inflammatory comments on marriage equality and aggressive anti-LGBTQ agenda has earned him a 0% rating from the group. Sessions is also opposed by Planned Parenthood; his constant efforts to defund the women’s health clinics and his dangerous anti-choice positions led Planned Parenthood to openly protest his Attorney General nomination. Despite all of this, there are SOME groups Sessions does agree with. The NRA endorsed Sessions who once joked that he thought the KKK was OK until he found out that some of them smoked marijuana. Apparently, that’s where he draws the line!

5. He is against all immigration

The  conservative publication National Review once called Jeff Sessions “Amnesty’s Worst Enemy.” He has a long history of opposing any and all bills that offer a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. But it isn’t just undocumented immigration that Sessions’ opposes; in 2015 he wrote an opinion piece for the Washington Post titled: “America Needs to Curb Immigration Flow” wherein he argued that legal immigrants are the driving force behind low wages in our country. As a solution, he called for a slow in immigration, adding that a slower flow of new immigrants would allow people time to assimilate. For clarification, that’s dog whistling.

Bonus: his middle name is Beauregard. I mean…come on.

Basically I think that we call all agree, in the words of Jean Ralphio Saperstein, Jeff Sessions is “the woooooooorst.” He’s the worst in the world.
