2020 Virginia Races to Watch

OK people. It’s August and sh*t is getting very real. Donald Trump has made it very clear that he doesn’t want to leave the White House. After four years of white nationalist rallies, racism, and a mishandled pandemic, we need to get this man the eff out of here. When he goes, his cronies need to GTFO with him. That’s why it’s CRITICAL that you vote this year in every race on your ballot. Here in Virginia we have some battleground districts that will need high turnout to stay in the progressive column. Here are 3 key races to watch this November:

VA Congressional District 10 – Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton

Virginia’s 10th district includes all of Clarke, Frederick, and Loudoun counties, parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties, and the independent cities of Manassas, Manassas Park and Winchester.  Before 2018, this was a Republican stronghold of wealthy and highly educated voters. This district closely matches statewide voting trends in the majority of elections. In 2018 Jennifer Wexton defeated incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock. Wexton knows that Trump is a lying disgrace and was happy to stand up and say his time is up! She needs our support to keep the 10th progressive.

VA Congressional District 07 – Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger

The 7th Congressional district stretches across much of Central Virginia including all of Orange, Culpeper, Goochland, Louisa, Nottoway, Amelia, and Powhatan counties. The district also incorporates large portions of Chesterfield and Henrico counties. This district is 65% white and hadn’t elected a Democrat since before I was born (since 1971!) until 2018. Another fun fact? Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger was the first woman ever elected to the 7th when she won two years ago! She also knows how dangerous Donald Trump is to American democracy. This year, Spanberger is fighting to keep the 7th progressive once again.

VA Congressional District 2 – Congresswoman Elaine Luria

This one is going to be a fight, folks. This district covers all of Accomack, Northampton and York counties, all of the cities of Virginia Beach and Williamsburg and parts of the cities of Norfolk and Hampton. The interesting thing here is this district flips and flops between Democratic and Republican control every few years. Elaine Luria was elected in 2018 and before that, it was held by Republicans between 2011 -2018. She defeated Republican Scott Taylor just two years ago. Luria will have a round two with Taylor this fall. We need to make sure he stays out of the 2nd for good! Bonus: VA Congressional District 5 – Dr. Cameron Webb

By winning a competitive primary, Dr. Cameron Webb is well on his way to bringing the heat to district 5. Now that the incumbent has lost his own primary in a drive thru convention, it looks like this one is going to be something to see! Dr. Webb is looking to flip this district which was held by Republicans for a long time and was originally represented by James Madison. No pressure! If you know anyone who lives in this district, which happens to be the largest one in Virginia, tell them the doctor will see them now!

And there you have it. Three races to keep on your radar screen this November. All three republicans here are Trump cronies so you know it won’t be boring. Feel the need to weigh in on our recommendations? Fill out our Progressive Voters Guide Survey here.
