Voters Reject Restrictions on Abortion, Overwhelmingly Support Democrats to Hold the Senate and Take Back the House of Delegates

Virginia—Sending a clear message, voters stood up yesterday to protect our fundamental right to reproductive freedom, including abortion access, without interference from politicians. People in our community showed up despite the obstacles to voter rights perpetrated by Governor Glenn Youngkin and his Republican allies in the General Assembly. Thanks to Democrats, Virginia moved from 49th to 11th in the country for voting rights by enacting several voting rights laws to make accessing the ballot box easy for everyone. And today, the voters decided that in Virginia, they wanted abortion to remain the law of the land in the Commonwealth.

“People in our community have made it clear over and over again that they believe everyone should be able to access abortion and choose how and when to become a parent for themselves. Today was no different, and we will keep shouting this message from the rooftops. 77% of Virginia voters have said they want everyone to have access to abortion care when they need it, and they showed up to the polls to prove it. With access to abortion under attack all over the country, and Virginia as the last state in the south without an abortion ban, it is more important than ever that we know where all of our leaders stand on abortion access and reproductive freedom so we can vote out those who don’t agree with us like we did today,” LaTwyla Mathias, Executive Director of Progress Virginia, said.
