Scott Taylor is back! The one-term Congressman from Virginia’s 2nd District announced last week that he plans to run for Senate against Senator Mark Warner in 2020.
“But wait,” you might say. “Isn’t he the one whose campaign was under investigation for fraud?” Yup. In fact, earlier this year, one of his campaign staffers was indicted for submitting fraudulent signatures to get an independent candidate on the ballot to split the vote for his Democratic opponent during the 2018 House elections.
While it’s true that Taylor has not yet been charged with fraud, there is still an active investigation into the matter. He STILL has not been cleared of wrongdoing.
Scott Taylor Voted to Take Away Healthcare From Virginians
Besides alleged campaign fraud, there are more reasons to be wary of Taylor’s run for Senate . While he was in Congress, he voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and for the disastrous Republican alternative healthcare law, the American Healthcare Act. That law would have resulted in 51 million people without insurance coverage by 2026. On top of that, 685,000 Virginians would have lost access to healthcare if Republicans like Taylor had successfully repealed the ACA.
We don’t need anyone in the Senate who thinks it would be OK for so many people to be forced to choose between doing to the doctor and putting food on the dinner table.
Scott Taylor Voted for Tax Cuts for the Richest One Percent and Wealthy Corporations
Taylor is so against Virginia working families that he voted in late 2017 in favor of Trump’s tax scam, a sweeping overhaul to the nation’s tax code. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was actually written to line the pockets of the top one percent of Americans, corporations, and their stockholders. The tax cut is costing Americans so much money that cuts to our social safety net are looming. The budgets for beloved social programs like Medicare and Medicaid are all under threat just so the rich can keep getting richer.
Scott Taylor Is BAD For Virginia
Scott Taylor has no business running for higher office when his last campaign is still under investigation for fraud. But more than that, we don’t need someone who would vote in lock step with Trump and the GOP.
But we’ll worry about Taylor next year. For now, we should stay focused on the Virginia elections for the House of Delegates and State Senate. We need to make sure that the slate of a progressive candidates who voted to expand healthcare to an additional 400,000 Virginians are re-elected to stand up for the values we hold dear. Plus, there’s a whole new class of progressive candidates running for office as well. Wondering who all these people are? Stay tuned for our upcoming Progressive Voter Guide that’s going to give you all the details on progressive candidates running for office.
So, make sure that you are registered to vote and that you vote on November 5, 2019 for candidates that will actually do something for the people in our communities.
