WHEN: Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Harrison Museum of African American Culture, 2502 Melrose Ave NW, Roanoke, VA 24017
WHO: Local residents, community leaders, and members of the Stop NextEra coalition
ROANOKE, VA — Roanoke-area residents will gather Thursday, September 24, ahead of Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi’s Energy Costs Listening Tour stop to speak out against the proposed $67 billion Dominion Energy–NextEra merger and demand that Virginia put the interests of families and communities ahead of a massive corporate deal.
The rally is organized by the Stop NextEra coalition, a statewide coalition of Virginians working to stop the proposed merger.
The proposed merger would create the largest regulated utility in the world, giving an even larger corporation control over decisions that affect Virginia families and communities for decades.
Residents are raising practical concerns about what the merger could mean for everyday Virginians, including:
- Higher electric bills for families already struggling with rising costs
- Less accountability as Dominion and NextEra grow their corporate power
- Impacts on local communities and landowners from energy infrastructure and transmission projects
- The future of clean energy and whether Virginia can build a more affordable, reliable energy system
- A rushed and insufficiently transparent process that has not given communities across Virginia enough opportunity to weigh in
This is not just about a corporate merger. Decisions about Virginia’s electric utilities affect every household — from the monthly power bill to the infrastructure built in our communities and the future of our energy system. People in our community are coming together to make clear: Our energy future should work for us, not just corporate shareholders.
The State Corporation Commission (SCC) is currently reviewing NextEra Energy Inc.’s proposed acquisition of control of Virginia Electric and Power Company, known as Dominion Energy Virginia, as part of the planned merger between NextEra Energy Inc. and Dominion Energy Inc.
